Civitan International was founded in Birmingham, Alabama in 1917, an association of almost 900 local clubs in 33 countries throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
The word Civitan is taken from the Latin word "Civitas" which means citizenship. Civitan's motto is "Builders of Good Citizenship".
Our mission is to serve the community by filling human needs that are not met by other organizations or by individual efforts. As Civitans, we seek experiences that provide life direction, character building, leadership development and the satisfaction of helping others.
Since the 1930's Civitan International's major focus has been toward helping people with developmental disabilities; however, local clubs are involved in a variety of community service projects.
Knowledge: We strive to understand and to learn more about our community and its needs.
Fellowship: We associate with others who have a strong desire to be of service to their community.
Our Belief: do unto others as you have them do unto you.
Our Pledge: to practice the Golden Rule and to build upon it a better and nobler citizenship.
